Coburger Hütte - Back Country Ski Opening

03.12.2013 to 04.12.2013
Coburger Hut via Ehrwalder Alm
SAC Skitour lvl: WS+ (last part)

Heavy snowfall during the past weekend, 100% sun and free time on weekdays.
Is there a better way to kill time than a skitour? No? So let's go!
Hans grabbed his snowboots and I took my brand new back country skis and we headed immediately to Ehrwald. Our destination was the wonderful Coburger Hütte. In summer it's just an easy 3h hike from the valley. But we have never been there in winter.

easy going on cross country slope
We started at the valley's cable car station at 11.00 am. Since the Ehrwald ski area was still closed, we had to go through some lonely slopes for 45 minutes until we got to the cable car station. At this point we left the skiing slopes and followed the cross country slopes to the Seeben lake (Seebensee).

frozen Seeben lake and the hardest part in front of us
After around 1.5h we passed the Seeben lake. Still on time and craving a yummy dinner in the winter room at the Coburger hut, we didn't expect how horrible the very short way to the hut would be. The snow got deeper and deeper and after a while we lost the path. We decided to do the last 300m through a gully and suddenly got stuck in the deep powder. It went too steep for my back country skis and i lost the grip. The gully was even too small for kick turns, so I had no choice: I had to unfasten my skis and walk. The powder went up to my hips as I continued to trek through the snow. Every 2m walked was followed by 5 minutes of rest. It was already late afternoon and it got darker. We saw the hut so close in front of us, in summer it would take just a couple of minutes, but right now it seemed to be impossible to reach. With our last energy, almost frozen and totally exhausted we finally reached the hut after another hour. 1 Hour for just 100 meter!!!

stuck in the powder
At the Hut, unable to move more than necessary, we lit the chimney and tried to warm ourselves up again. Half an hour later when the chimney warmed up the hut and our bones, we recovered slowly. Hans melted some snow and we prepared our dinner.

a real bromance
Next day: the weather was awesome and the powder was priceless! It was worth all the sweat.

Conclusion: It was an awesome start to the cross country season! To be continued...

Collecting Summits At Bayerische Voralpen - Lechnerkopf (1547m), Hochsalwand (1625m) and Haidwand (1585m)

13.10.2013
Lechnerkopf / Hochsalwand / Haidwand
SAC Hiking lvl: T4 / T3 / T4+
UIAA Climbing lvl: I / - / -

Next weekend next tour! After an exhausting 18 km trailrun at the Isar on saturday and heavy snowfall 2 days ago, we decided to do something close to Munich. Less than 1h drive and we started at 8am from the church at St. Margarethen.

right after sunrise - the misty fog gave the valley a magical look
We followed the trail around one and a half hours to the Lechneralm. Behind the hut we turned right and went up over a steep meadow to the Rampoldplatte.

The remaining fog and clouds were gone and the sun warmed to us up nicely. We followed the trail another half a hour and left it when we saw the gap between Lechnerkopf and Hochsalwand. Without a path we went to the foot of the Lechnerkopf and climbed the last 40 meters (UIAA I) to the summit.
easy and enjoyable climbing to the Lechnerkopf

After a short break we climbed the same way down and continued our previous trail further to the Hochsalwand. Just one hour later we arrived our second summit.

Lechnerkopfsecond summit was f*cking windy
While enjoying lunch in heavy winds, we had a nice view to the famous Wendelstein with the old cog railway. At this point we met the some other hikers. Until then, we hadn´t seen any other hikers. We went on to our next and final summit of the day. The Haidwand has no trail, so we left the path after 20 minutes to the right and tried to find a our own way through the partly steep wood and bushes to the summit.

After beating the bushes, roots and branches we arrived safely the lonely and gorgeous Haidwand.
